We have an amazing group of retailers who sell and love FAT Paint, and we are so excited to introduce you to them all! Today, get to know Cindy from All About You Interiors in Bowmanville, Ontario a little bit better.

Cindy from All About You Interiors

Name: Cindy Garside

Business: All About You Interiors

Location: Bowmanville, ON

One word that best describes how you work: Passionately. Painting is my passion. My favorite part of decorating is painting. I love the transformative effect that the right hue of paint has to completely change the look and feel of a room or a tired piece of furniture.

What does a day in the life look like for you?
I am finding this question difficult to answer as I am still in the process of launching my home based studio. I can say that I have been busy spending my days renovating the studio to get it workshop and retail ready, creating new copy and doing photoshoots for the launch of my new website to reflect the change in direction that my business has taken. (Editor’s note: Cindy’s website has officially launched since this has been written! Be sure to check out her hard work!)

All About You Interiors Work

How did you get started?
I have been passionate about interior design for as long as I can remember. I recall loving to rearrange furniture and accessories around in my parent’s house when I was a child. In school, I was always good at math and art. You are not supposed to be good at both math and art. Upon graduating, I decided to take what I thought was the ‘safe route’ and went to University to study Computer Mathematics and ended up working for a very large computer company for the past 22+ years. At the same time, my creative artistic side was always calling out to me and I was always helping friends and family out with their design projects. It was what I loved to do. I decided, while continuing to work full-time, to formalize my passion for design by taking some design courses on a part-time basis. After completing some formal design education and after a much needed pep-talk with a Designer friend, I opened my Interior Decorating and Home Staging Business in 2012. In early 2013, I discovered something called chalk-paint and was instantly addicted. I have been refreshing old furniture and décor items ever since. I will paint anything if you will let me. Earlier this year, I stumbled across something called FAT Paint while browsing through Pinterest late one night looking for painted furniture inspirations. I reached out to The FAT Paint Company to inquire about becoming a retailer and the rest is history!

Why do you chose to stock FAT Paint?
I chose to stock FAT Paint because it is made in Canada and The FAT Paint Company brand resonates with me. I love the quality and the coverage of the paints and the fact that it is available in so many fun colors!

All About You Interiors FAT Paint Stock

Tell us about your favourite FAT Paint Project to-date:
My favorite FAT Paint Project to-date was refreshing an antique rocking chair for a friend of mine. He had purchased it for his son and was wanting to paint it black. When he discovered that I was now retailing FAT Paint, he asked if I could help. I suggested that we paint it in Raven and use silver gilding on it to hi-light the details and paint out the leather and silver grommets on the seat of the chair. We painted it together in his garage and turned it into something fun and modern. He now calls it his ‘Rockstar rocking chair’ and absolutely loves it. It was so much fun to do.

All About You Interiors Work

What’s your best tip for FAT Paint success?
Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to use color, experiment, be bold and have fun with your FAT Paint projects.

All About You Interiors Work

Outside of work, how do you choose to spend your time?
I can be found hanging out and having fun with my partner Dan, his two children and our cat Cheetos. We can usually be found swimming, kayaking  and enjoying the outdoors in the Summer and ice skating and skiing in the Winter.

What’s the next big goal you are working towards?
I am working towards having my own store-front and retail space. I would also like to write and create a design book.

Take Your Instagram Account To The Next Level With A FAT Background DIY!

Who doesn’t love the look of a clean, bright Instagram feed? We could spend hours scrolling through the feeds of Jillian Harris, Erin Sousa, Monika Hibbs and Jacquelyn Clark, just to admire their fresh and inspiring style. As you may know, a popular trend on Instagram known as the lay flat often features a bright, white background to style pretty items on. To get a sense of what we’re talking about, check out some of these great examples of a popular Instagram background.

This little gem is our clear skin secret weapon 👌🏼 #leVERTbeauty

A photo posted by LeVertBeauty.com (@levertbeauty) on

Did you know you can easily create your own perfect Instagram background using FAT Paint? A one-day project like this will help elevate your Instagram style and take your account to the next level!

To Make This Instagram Background, You’ll Need:

  • Eight 2×4 planks
  • Two smaller planks (to hold the back together) at least 32″ long
  • Specialty GLAZE in Raw Umber
  • Warm White FAT Paint
  • CLEAR Top Coat
  • Water
  • A bucket
  • A paintbrush
  • Small nails & nail gun

Start off by lying out your planks how you’ll like them. Ensure they’re clean and no odd ends need sanding off.

Bare Wood Turned Into Instagram Background

Part of the appeal to this style of background is the hint of wood grain peeking through the white. To enhance this effect, we used our Specialty GLAZE in Raw Umber to bring out the details. Mix your glaze with a generous amount of water before applying to the wood with you brush, about 1:3 glaze to water ratio. Brush on the wash with the grain. Let dry and feel free to add a second layer if you want it even darker. We only did one coat with this step as our focus is a bright, white background.

Start with a wash of Black Specialty GLAZE

Next, mix some Warm White FAT Paint with clean water to create a wash. We used a 1:4 ratio for our background. Apply to each plank with a paintbrush, again going with the grain, and be sure to not forget the ends of each plank!

Be sure to water down your paint for the white wash effect

The wash can spray, make sure you have a clear area to work in

Apply as many coats of your white wash as you’d like in order to reach your desired effect. In the end, we applied three coats before sealing with CLEAR Top Coat. You also have the option to distress your planks in areas if you’d like the blond wood to peek through. Don’t be afraid to let your inner artisan guide you to your desired result. Play and experiment.

Once our planks were dry, we flipped them over and adhered two long planks to the back, running the opposite direction of the planks. We used a small nail gun to do this, with minimal effect to the front of our background. This way, the planks are secured, and you have a bit of lift off the ground for your background.

The final result with three coats of white wash

This handy DIY can be done in just a couple of hours, with plenty of time to scroll your Instagram feed in-between! Be sure to tag your Instagram shots using this DIY Instagram Background, we’d love to see your work. Follow us at @thefatpaintco!

What can you paint with FAT Paint? What CAN’T you paint with FAT Paint!!!

Since using this product I have painted everything – including glass, metals, wood, laminate, and a mirror. Using FAT Paint will make your DIY project easier then you think. After being introduced to chalk-style paint, the time it takes me to complete home decor projects has been cut in half. Because FAT Paint has a matte finish there is very little dry time, allowing you to apply your second coat minutes after your first. With no smell or hash toxins, you can paint right in the comforts of your own home and have little to no clean up. I just put some newspapers under the feet of my pieces and jump right in.

Most of my projects are less then a day from start to finish and I end up using the piece in my home right away! Below are a few of my latest projects with FAT Paint.

I hope this inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and try a little FAT Paint for yourself.

I fell in love with refinishing furniture a number of years ago. My first piece was an old dresser I saw in the garbage room at my brother’s apartment building. As the old saying goes, someone’s trash is another one’s treasure! A new coat of paint, some handles, and a little distressing took this piece of garbage and transformed it into Shabby Chic Perfection! I still treasure this piece to this day as it sits in my bedroom where I can look at it fondly as my very first creation.

As I came across FAT Paint years later for the first time, I realized it is easy enough for anyone to take a project and turn it into their own personal treasure. FAT Paint is so versatile that I use it on so many different avenues. From mason jars to furniture, or even fabrics such as pillows and table runners. If I want to enhance a project even further, then my go to product is Extra FAT Embossing and Texture Medium. The details that this can add on a piece of furniture when using a stencil creates interest to draw not just the eye, but the fingertips as well. FAT Paint products fully encompass the senses for us budding creative types.

As a person who loves to paint furniture, if I had to give only one piece of advice, it would be to really embrace the imperfections in your creations as they are truly what makes a piece so perfect. So go out and find that perfect piece! Grab a can of FAT Paint and embrace the FATastic journey.

Dharma Chair with Patina Wax

We took an old, boring chair and gave it a new lease on life this month featuring one of our newest FAT Paint colours: Dharma. You’ll be inFATuated with our latest FAT Paint make-over for two key reasons.

  1. The use of Patina FAT Wax to darken the vibrant and bright Dharma, adding more depth and interest to the piece.
  2. The entire project was completed with only one sample jar of FAT Paint.

You read that right. To completely transform this stunning chair, only one 4oz jar of paint, as seen in the photo below, was required. It’s incredible how far FAT can go!

The entire project only required one sample jar of FAT Paint to complete!

To showcase the impact Patina FAT Wax can have, we were sure to take some process photos. With the photo on the left below, you’ll find the arm of the chair painted with two coats of Dharma FAT Paint, sanded and distressed, with Natural FAT Wax applied. The photo on the right is the same arm after the Patina FAT Wax application.

Before and After with Patina FAT Wax

Stunning, right? To learn how you can achieve the same effect using Patina FAT Wax, check in with your local retailer and inquire about FAT Paint Workshops. There’s no better way to learn than getting some hands-on experience guided by one of our FAT-tastic retailers! They’re pro’s at what they do!

The full reveal of this darling Dharma chair

We can’t stop admiring this darling Dharma chair ever since it entered our showroom. The Patina’d Dharma perfectly matches the subtle purple found in the seat’s fabric from Sea Meets The Sky Design Co. The distressing detail gives this chair character and interest alongside the aging from the Patina FAT Wax. We know you’ll fall in love with it too as you scroll through the rest of the photos below.

It's all in the details with this FAT Paint piece!

Get to know Town & Country Vintage Market

Town & Country Vintage Market was created by myself, Tonya Makuch, and my friend Naomi Corr. After participating in a few vintage markets together, our love for the markets naturally grew into our own venue. Painting vintage and antique furniture has been a hobby for both of us, and now has evolved into a business. After discovering FAT Paint, we knew it would be the  perfect match to have as our summer market sponsors.

Being avid painters, Naomi and I both use FAT Paint for many of the projects we have tackled in the past and plan to get to in the future. The easy to use product and beautiful selection of colours makes it a perfect choice for many of our projects. The Town & Country Summer Market always takes place at the end of June at The Apple Barn. This year’s market is June 25th.We originally chose this venue for the country market feel. We want our shoppers to experience an outdoor market with beautiful things at every corner. The spacious farm allows our vendors to spread out and make beautiful displays for everyone to enjoy. The booths are nestled between old barns, quaint country buildings, and the resident farm animals. In the heart of the market we have a cute country stage where The FAT Paint Company will be demoing their product. Alongside their booth is a country kitchen where you can grab a bite and sit down and enjoy the view. The Corner Store will be stocked with fresh veggies and food to go. Everything you need to enjoy the country sunshine is right there.

It is truly a sight to see.

We are excited to show off our 60 artisans and all their talents. This year’s market is truly going to be a special treat! We hope to see you there!
